I don't know if you can still buy laptops with windows xp on them, because I was told hat jaws doesn't work on windows vista.

JAWS does, limitedly work with Vista. However, I would still go for Vista. I would recommend a laptop with a Intl or an AMD processor with two cores. Maybe the Intl core 2 duo processor with as much RAM as you can find, 2 Gigs is good, at least a 100 Gig hard drive, but again, the bigger the better, and as much RAM as possible you can get on a Graphics card. 256 is OK, 512 MB is better. Other than that, they all have DVD drives. You might want to have them turn the laptop on so you can test the speakers out, but they all should have a sound card.

hmm, ram, ram, ram. Most processes on a windows xp machine with at least 50 of them running at the same time will use no more than aproximately 500 mb of your whole thing. Additionally there is the paging file, that uses your hard drive in cases in which ram is limited. I'd go for xp, because most things are still compatible with xp and well screen readers work better with it. It is then less bundled (if it is NOT HP branded) and may cost less. I recommend buying them over the net; many things are chepaer that way too. Dual processors might help; however, this is asking for too mcuh performance. If you use it as a studio ro something like that, then that might be what you need. If you are going to use for mostly entertainment and storing files and such, then even an 80 gig hard drive with maybe 512 mb or ram or a gig of ram will do just fine.

Apple Macbook, then buy a copy of XP separate, and Boot Camp it. The most stable Windows PC of the bunch!

Can someone put those third and fourth posts in English, please? I haven't got a clue what any of that means.

I called three stores because for odvious reasons I needd a laptop that could use jaws. and only one out of those three stors had an XP laptop. not to mention they only had one. it is an HP compact. I don't know what it's running but I have office 2007 and running Jaws 8 point what ever update was the latest one!

Hmmm, gotta go with Jesse on this one. I have never seen windows run smoother then on a mac. Amazingly responsive. So, why can't we get that from a PC which is supposed to run windows? Leopard is coming out soon as well and there promises to be an incredible ammount of new changes for the better.

RAM. Random Access Memory. It is the memory that is used for programs to run. JAWS is a memory hog, and so is windows. You will get optimum performance out of two gigabytes of RAM. Hard Drive Capacity. This is how much you can store. You will want at least 80 Gigabytes, but the more the better. Vista. Microsoft's latest Operating System. Speakers and Sound Card. the things that deliver sound to you from your computer. Processor. The thing that runs your computer. Two cores means that it can theoretically do twice the amount. Again, as was stated in post four, you won't really need it as most programs aren't written to utilize that much processing power, but if you want to keep your laptop for any amount of time, you will want one with two cores.

Oh, and I agree about the MAC. They are excellent machines.

Post 14 by Jesse (Hmm!) on Sunday, 07-Oct-2007 22:32:18

Yeah! If Leopard gives us everything they threaten, I'll probably delete the Windows partition completely on this machine, and use the less stable operating system for recording only, providing Logic doesn't pan out.

I'm deciding among Apple, HP, or Toshiba. I heard a lot of good comments about Apple computers before i posted here, so, I might have to go with an Apple computer.

i have been thinking about getting a laptop myself, i did have a dell but had to many problems with it so i think i will have 1 built, thinking this may be the best way to go just for the fact that there won't be any junk on it.
